Annick Goutal Musc Nomade

Musc Nomade is one of Annick Goutal's "Les Orientalistes" fab four, along with Ambre Fétiche, Myrrhe Ardente and Encens Flamboyante.

Musc Nomade is one of my two very favorite musk perfumes (Bruno Acampora Musc is the other) and Isabelle Doyen, who created it, tells me that it's her personal favorite of the Goutal line.

Musc Nomade is a floral whisper of stone-washed musk, amber and patchouli. It's faded and lived-in with a wheaty, bittersweet hint of autumnal vegetation crunched underfoot. It's an “amplified you” scent that smells beautifully nude.

  1. I am on such an Oriental kick these days ....and this sounds right up my Casbah alley. Great review and you always make me smile with your great sense of humor.

    1. Thanks LS. It took me a while to appreciate this one - especially as I was anosmic to it for a while. Now it's one of my solids.

  2. I love that blouse. The color, the sparkles, the bow and your hair frame your face so well. PRETTY!

I do think it's possible to become, er, nosmic to something you were a- or hypo-nosmic to before, as well as HYPER-nosmic to something you barely noticed before, and this seems to happen only or at least especially with synthetic molecules like musks and woody ambers. Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes not so much. I'm glad in this case it was beneficial. I've heard a lot of people say they can't smell NR for Her at all, which seems so odd if you CAN smell it, in which case it's quite loud.

    1. Elisa, thanks for the PRETTY talk. I do love a bow or ruff detail on a neckline. I just saw the Hollywood Costume exhibit at the V&A museum in here in London, and learned that after one of Bette Davis's Queen Elizabeth movie finished shooting, the wardrobe gals made off with all the white ruffs to wear with their LBDs. They discovered that ruffs are built-in face framers and light reflectors. (Kind of like a fancy version of what dogs have to wear after "the snip".)

Now that you mention NR for Her, you remind me that NR Musc for Her is another peekaboo musk perfume for me. (Or *was* -- it's been discontinued.)

    2. Yes, ruffs! When I first met my boyfriend of many years he told me thinks ruffs are underrated and I agree.

    3. My scientist husband says it is absolutely true you can become hypernosmic to certain scents. And I'm definitely having problems with certain synthetic wood notes now that just TAKE OVER EVERYTHING.

    4. Interesting, Nina, because I was wondering if was all in my mind that the shrill faux bois in everything suddenly seemed intolerable.

  3. "I think it goes great straight from the office to a night out.....to an orgy." I was so *not* expecting the sentence to end the way it did. I literally laugh out loud (which for some sad reason, does't happen all that much...at least as far as online videos go. So thanks for that!). On the "to try" list this one goes. I love a good musk. I'm bummed that SSS Egyptian Musk has been discontinued; will have to give this one a go.

    1. Pleased to tickle your pickle, Joanna.

I'm bummed that NR Musc for Her is discontinued. It was wildly expensive for what it was ($150 for not-very-complicated white musk), but it was just pretty, plain and simple. I dilly-dallied on getting it because of the price, and now it's gone.

I agree. Katie always makes me laugh.

  5. sounds very intriguing, I need to revisit this one- at first I found it a little too ...hm..damp? or lived in as you say. But with musc it's mysterious, I can enjoy skanky Yatagan but dislike the hospital (in my opinion) smell of Le Labo Musc 25, although I would say I generally tend to prefer cleaner muscs with my favorite being Narcisso Rodriguez for Him Oil. Bruno Acampora also remains a mystery to me- I suspect I accidently received some other Bruno Acampora sample and never actually got to smell the real thing. Cybele

    1. Cybele, I get the damp you're talking about. I experience it as a "scalpy" smell - the kind of originating-from-a-human scent that you only pick up if you're intimate with them or invading their personal space in some way.

Bruno Acampora Musc is even scalpy-er than Musc Nomade.

I really like NR for Him Musc Oil, and am so glad it's still available. I like it better than the For Him perfume.

    2. I need to order another sample of B. Acampora Musc, mine smells very bright, sharp and rather laundry-like, not intimate at all- not sure what it is. Once I received Yatagan instead of Caron 3rd Man but that was easy to detect! Cybele

  6. love the part where she shows the bottle and comments- without surprise- that her bottle happens to be "glowing" ....Takes a lot to rattle our Katie- not even a supernaturally possessed bottle of Goutal can throw her off her stride- such a professional! perhaps bottle was just a aglow from all the adoration...I get like that sometimes:) and yes- blouse is so pretty! This one is on my list to try- thanks, Katie!!!

  7. Wow! I'm sold, course, I'm sold on everything you talk about.

Speaking of "animal," ever since I heard you use this description to describe perfume scents I have been smelling my cats a lot. And I love it. Weird? Probably not here amongst friends.

    Thanks Katie!

    1. You are indeed among friends. The cats might have a different take on it, however. "Look out, Fluffy! Here come the human's nostrils again!"

  10. Hi Katie, as excited as I was that we are getting some niche perfumes, I'm surprised that they dont offer the hole collections, as I didn't find the Les Orientalist at Annick Goutal counter. The same thing with Comm de Garson They didn't get the incense ones :( really disappointed . Hessa

  11. Musc Nomade is beautiful. It instantly reminded me of Musc by Bruno Acampora. I need to try one on each arm and see if my nose can distinguish the differences.
