Prada Candy

I love Candy (and candy, little c, too!) -- it's a melt into your skin caramel perfume that manages to be sensual as opposed to "oops, I spilled my dessert down my décolletage!" (Although that probably scores high on the sensuality charts, depending on the dessert and the décolletage.) When I first smelled Prada Candy on my skin, I said “oh wow”, mind-blown-hippie-style. I wasn't expecting the cajeta caramel, with its beasty, milky niff. This particular review is a brought to you through the power of YouTube guru teamwork -- i.e. a collaboration with my friend Cora over at Vintage or Tacky. She demos the most fantastical, don't-dream-it-be-it makeup looks, and here she brings us the wonder of her Candy look. She's like the interpretive dance version of maquillage!
Everyday retro glamour in action!
Candy is available from Prada.com and Amazon.com, starting at $80 for 1.7 oz

  1. Oh I love that someone else loves this! It's been getting horribly trashed on other fragrance sites, but I actually thought it was a genuinely lovely fragrance. Soft, warm and comforting.

I'm a guy, but I keep spraying this on myself whenever I see it in a store.

  2. John, it's that sweet goaty goodness that sets Candy apart from the other pink stuff out there.

  3. Honestly speaking, this is such an unexpected turn from Prada for me, I was actually worried that this bottle could damage their brand identity, so it's good to hear the definitive review on it has a positive tilt. Am extremely interested to see how consumers take to this product as it's still up in the air.

  4. Alex, I do think Candy (the scent, name and bottle) is Prada throwing their arms open to the kids.

  5. It sounds as though Candy has definite commonality with L'eau Ambree, which I really enjoy. Putting the two side by side, how do you think they relate? Is there one you personally like better, or is it an apples vs. oranges affair?

  6. Katie, you and the lovely Léa Seydoux share a resemblance! Maybe your hair, or maybe, I can only assume, your shared badass moves.

I have to get my hands on this Prada Candy. I'm a fan of both L'eau Ambree and Pink Sugar and I can't imagine I won't love Candy. The other night I even dreamed of it (this without even having smelled it yet!).

  7. Elizabeth, now that is the most flattering compliment. I sure appreciate it!

  8. Nathan, it's not exactly apples and oranges, more like apples and toffee-covered apples. Candy is beautiful, but I'm not a sweetie-sweet wearing gal. But yes, that L'Eau Ambree is present in Candy's drydown.

  9. It's nice of Prada to release a candy perfume right before Halloween!

Goaty? I'll have to dip my caramel apples in Gjetost.

  10. I honestly can't see Candy being anything less than a commercial bullseye. You've got the coveted Prada name, a cute bottle, and who doesn't like candy? They're going after the young'uns with this, true, but in an admirably Prada way - it's not a hackneyed, slapdash perfume - and the young'uns have cash to burn. It's a brilliant business decision on Prada's part, perfumista whinging be damned. (And it seems more than a few perfumistas love it, so there ya go.)

Speaking of smelling perfumes in dreams...last night I dreamt I came across the entire Vivienne Westwood ouevre in a drugstore, including one in a candy heart-studded bottle called "Be My Valentine", which I'm quite sure doesn't actually exist. I ripped open a box of Boudoir and sprayed it with ludicrous abandon. It smelled like an extremely watered-down chypre, almost non-existent. (I have never smelled Boudoir, or indeed any Westwood perfume, in real life, nor do I have any particular desire to.) Then I was escorted out of the store by security, but not before smashing the bottle on the ground and cackling maniacally. It was a lucid dream (ie. I was aware that I was dreaming), and I knew I could get away with it. Why I come across Vivienne Westwoods in my dreams and not, say, a few vintage Guerlains or Serge Lutens, I'll never know. [End non-sequitur.]

  11. What an entertainingly specific dream, Darryl! Now that you've got the hang of lucid dreaming, you probably can direct yourself towards the vintage perfume escapades of your...dreams.

Yes, I'm interested to see how Candy does. Personality-wise, it actually has more of a Miu Miu vibe than Prada: younger, quirkier and cuter.

  12. Nora, wouldn't it be nice to go perfume trick or treating? "Awww, I got 4 Angels. I'll trade you 2 of them for 1 L'Artisan Dzing!"

    Bloody Frida: Cora's the coolest.

I LOVE Candy, which is sweet but with a darker edge to it somehow. Denyse of Graindemusc likened it to armour for the '40-something woman in a brutal world'. I can report that it also works a treat for the over 50s!

  14. Ok, now you are getting me excited for THREE of these sweet things- Ambre Narguile, Organza Indecence, and Prada Candy...if you could only pick one....
    Fleurine

  15. Fleurine, for my taste, I'd go for Organza Indecence, but all are beautiful.

  16. Katie,

I know you are a big proponent of not labeling fragrances as simply male or female, so what is your take on Candy? Clearly it is marketed towards women, but I must admit I find the scent intoxicating, yet am not quite sure how it would translate on a man. Thoughts?

  17. Joe, I've not yet smelled Candy on manskin, but am thinking all that cuddly benzoin might work nicely.

  18. I too *love* Candy. But, alas, my husband finds it too bubble-gummy. Any suggestions for something that might please both our noses?

  19. Leigh, a slightly more adult version of Candy can be found in Perfumerie Generale Indochine. Read up on it at LuckyScent.

  20. This is the first department store fragrance I've bought in a long time and I love it. I'd classify it as a syrupy amber but that lasts and lasts.

    1. Oh Steffee, this is a GOOD one for you. I am pleasantly surprised to hear that it has staying power on you. It seemed to peter out on me.
