Viewer Mail: I Want to Smell Like a Bad-Girl Rocker

Hi there!

What would you recommend for a perfume that gives off a kind of bad-girl, rocker vibe yet is still young without being too floral. I'm a big fan of orientals.

Thanks!

reallionaire2008

P.S. I'm 12.

Hi reallionaire! To me, a "bad-girl rocker" perfume screams (into the mic, lots of feedback) deep, dark notes: rose, patchouli, leather. My rebel nose wants to smell moonlit resins and musk. I'm thinking of fragrances with the power to unsettle, with an urge to disturb.

But disturb without being twist-your-melon bonkers, because you're looking for "young", reallionaire, not Siouxsie Sioux terrifying. Or Peaches terrifying. Or Lady Gaga terrifying. Or Karen O terrifying. Or Pink terrifying. Or Katy Perry terrifying. (Okay, so the terror dried up somewhere around Pink.) And let's face it, there is a limit to the amount of rocking that can be accomplished on a school night.

See if any of these turn your amp up to 11:

Lolita Lempicka Fleur de Corail
(Nag Champa incense & a touch of tropical flowers)
Stella McCartney Stella (rose & salty musk)
Nanette Lapore Nanette (rose, cedarwood, incense)
Kenzo Amour (smoky vanilla)
Kenzo Amour Indian Holi (floral vanilla with berries & incense)
MAC Africanimal (honey & woods)
Kat Von D Sinner (jasmine, patchouli & musk)
Gap The Lover (apricot, patchouli & suede)

Fumeheads, this 12-year-old is ready to rock! What young-but-cool perfumes should she try?

  1. Bulgari Black! That smokey, vanilla scent is just begging to be worn with skinny jeans and studs.

Also, Dior Hypnotic Poison with its dark rootbeer and vanilla or Le Labo Patchouli 24 which has smoke, birch tar, and engine oil all mixed in: can't say more rocker than that!

  2. I know, I know, Beauty Bitch - I had Bulgari Black and Dior Hypnotic Poison at the tizzy top o' the list, until I found out Junior Bad Girl was 12. So I subbed in Kenzo Amour for Bulgari Black, and Lempicka Fleur de Corail for Hypnotic Poison, figuring they're a bit more accessible for youthful noses. And again, you're so correct that Le Labo Patchouli 24 is the punkest of them all, but I'm thinking that a weekly allowance only stretches so far!

But how impressive that someone so young has such sophisticated tastes! No Hello Kitty Momoberry for her!

  3. A bad-girl rocker sounds like sweat and cigs to me. I don't know what perfume is like that but your recommendations of Nanette and Kenzo Amour sound close. I hope that reallionaire lets us know what she chooses!

  4. If we were dealing with a bad-girl rocker in her second decade, I would've thrown Etat Libre d'Orange Jasmin et Cigarette and LesNez Manoumalia (sweaty rubbery tiare) at her.

And yeah, I also hope that reallionaire checks in with her choices!

  5. I was thinking PG's Musc Maori, but I suppose if it's out of my price range, it won't fit in a twelve-year old's budget. Then again, most middle schoolers seem to have more money than I do...

  6. I'd recommend Lady Vengeance from Juliette Has A Gun.

  7. Someone should rock her world by sneaking a can of Montale's Cuir d'Arabie into her lunchbox.
