Decennial Santal Sacre

Santal Sacré is one of four perfumes in the new Decennial line, launched by perfume e-tailer Lucky Scent to celebrate their tenth birthday -- and their home in Los Angeles.

Baby Lucky Scent grew up to encompass Scent Bar, the Hollywood smell spot where celebrity fumeheads include Morrissey (Comme des Garçons Avignon), Tilda Swinton (Etat Libre d'Orange Like This) and Debra Messing (Bruno Acampora Musc).

Lucky Scent lads Adam and Franco invited me to have a sniff round the Decennials and swoop in for a close-up on my favorite. I liked them all: Nuit Épicée -- an earthy, boys-y gourmand; the dry sweet powder of Lys du Desert; Bois Bourbon, with its creamy saffron/almond booze cloud.

But it was Santal Sacré that seized me. It's a pleasing, peppery swirl of incense, sandalwood, cedar and musk. Santal Sacré's underlying vegetation indicates that one's sacred space might be found in the chaparral of the Hollywood hills, somewhere between the Hollywood Sign and Griffiths Observatory.

Fans of robust, outdoorsy incense fragrances like Satellite Padparadscha and Sonoma Scent Studio Incense Pure will enjoy holy-rollin' with Santal Sacré.

Santal Sacré is available from LuckyScent.com at $150 for 75 ml

  1. Hi Katie!
This Decennial sounds lovely, too bad LuckyScent is so far away from where I live. But you never know right, I might just accidentally find it somewhere close ;)

    1. Hi Lucasai! LuckyScent is a website, so it's as near as your computer screen! You can contact them to see if they ship to wear you live.

    2. I know Katie, I know. What I meant to say by "far away" is the fact that I live on the whole different continent so the samples would have to travel over the ocean

    3. Drat that ocean, separating us from that which makes our hearts sing.

  2. Incense remains my top perfume note. I don't know why. It's just always been something very grounding and comforting for me. Forget baking spices. I feel smothered by anything that blatantly comforting.

    1. NTLTSI: Too on-the-nose comfort scents can be too obvious. Or maybe I just want the vanilla and spices to remain in my cupcakes and cookies, and not stray to my skin.

Incense has been a tool for meditation and repose since ancient times. It must work, huh?

    2. It must be something innately soothing, because I wasn't raised Catholic or of any other faith that would use incense during a church service. My family is Baptist. Maybe that means that I should find the smell of snake venom oddly soothing. Ha! I kid. No snake handling at our service growing up. If only.

    3. Actually, there are a number of traumatized Catholics who find church incense anything but soothing! But yeah, the mysterious complexity of incense and other resins, with their sappy, peppery, lemony list, seem to be conducive to reflection, quietude, meditation, prayer.

  3. This sounds intriguing, especially the earth/mud note, since I adore Mitti Attar. Are there any other perfumes that have a pronounced "mud" note like mitti? I'm hoarding a tiny exquisite bottle of it, and since true Sandalwood is becoming so rare I only use it for special occasions.

    1. I've never smelled Mitti Attar, but a few muddy thoughts for you is CB I Hate Perfume Black March, and the luxury benzoin-inflected mud of Chanel Coromandel.

  4. I tested the Decennials and swung between Lys du Desert and the Santal Sacre as my favourites. I ended up getting the Lys du Desert (my sister bought back from LA to me in the UK)which I prefer to L'Air du Desert as it is slightly sweeter and a good "everyday" fragrance. I wish I could have afforded the Santal Sacre as well as I do keep sniffing the tester and loving it, but the days of having perfume shipped over from the US are looking to be a thing of the past with the current regulations making it super expensive and so much stuff being confiscated or destroyed. Even a lot of ebay sellers will not risk sending samples. I wish Lucky Scent would open up a London shop !

    1. Are LuckyScent no longer shipping to the UK because of the regulations? Perhaps they have a way around it...

  5. Lucky Scent are shipping to the UK but it is $40 which makes it expensive especially when you have to factor in customs charges which are charged on the cost of the perfume plus the shipping,it does tend to put me off ordering a FB . I continue to order samples so at least get to test stuff.

    1. This is the kind of situation where "perfume mules" come in handy.
