Vera Wang Princess Night, Coach Poppy and Stella McCartney L.I.L.Y

Katie and Krista nose-meld with unknown perfumes.
I can't believe I've been in London for an entire month now! The new car smell hasn't even begun to fade from the experience, probably because it's so different to the London I experienced when I lived here in the last century. A big change is the demographic: there are now oodles of young Europeans swarming the streets and I hear Italian, French and a smorgasbord of eastern European languages everywhere I go. Practically the only place I hear the yowly London accent is from construction sites. I may feel nostalgic for the old London accent, but not for the old London coffee, which is why I'm so jazzed (italics caused by drinking too much coffee) by the new snob culture here for fancy Joe. It involves lots of hole-in-the-wall shops with long queues, steampunk-looking cappuccino machines, artisanal beans, and serving up the stuff, inexplicably handsome young men. Like, rock star handsome. Coffee. It's the new rock'n'roll. My perfume calendar has been full, between trying imminent releases (Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud and Madonna Truth or Dare; reviews to come), hanging out with my new buddy Azzi Glasser (creator of the entire Agent Provocateur perfume line and Illamasqua Freak, to name but a few), and planning a handful of fragrance events, including one for Basenotes coming up April 19th. In short, it's fumie hog heaven. Oink. The video above is the first of a series of three I shot last week with Krista Madden, the headmistress of snazzy style website Beauty and the Dirt. She invited me to launch a guerrilla assault on a motley crew of (mostly) new releases, and do a little free-associating with my first impressions. In some cases, the perfumes gave as good as they got, and I was the one who ended up assaulted. But it was all in the cause of sharing intel with you, my fellow fumies -- enquiring noses want to know! Perfumes featured in the video are: Vera Wang Princess Night Coach Poppy Stella McCartney L.I.L.Y
Princess Night is available from Amazon.com at $48 for 1.7 oz Poppy is available from Perfumania at $65 for 1.7 oz L.I.L.Y info is available from StellaMcCartney.com

  1. Dear Katie Puckrikandroll:

Please inform Ms. Krista Madden that she needs absolutely NO help from those fragrances you just reviewed. They need more of her.

    Sincerely yours,
    Stefush

  2. I have experienced Poppy many times (I have a friend for whom it's her all-time favorite, so she makes all her friends wear it in addition to wearing it herself, so she can smell it big-time all the time). I like it for two reasons:

    1. In the opening and for most of its life, it smells EXACTLY like the old version of the Healing Garden Passionate Rose. Yes a cheap body spray which I used to like but which now smells different.

    2. In it's extreme drydown, when you think it's already gone, it smells exactly like L'Artisan Mure et Musc Extreme, one of my all-time favorite scents.

So it me, it has no smell of its own, but I still like it, haha.
And your little note about the cute barista boys reminds me of the song "Taylor the Latte Boy." Have you heard it?

    1. Now that's something I've never heard before: a person so loving their perfume that they make all their friends wear it. Usually it's the opposite!

Hah, I know nothing of Poppy's drydown, owing the fact that by the time we'd wrapped up shooting 3 vids, I was wearing 9 perfumes! So that Mure et Musc Extreme detail is welcome.

I am not familiar with Taylor the Latte Boy. I will seek it out.

    1. Thanks Deb! T or D is a very simple but pretty tuberose/jasmine/sweet vanilla number. Worth checking out if you love white florals.

  5. Fun video - my favourite line was the one about Paul McCartney being strapped for time, hence his recourse to acronyms!

I am also looking forward to the new Madonna scent. It hits the shops in April over here I believe, or some of them anyway.

    Loving the frock too!

    1. Thanks Vanessa - can you believe the dress is from good ol' Marks & Sparks? Sometimes the art of shopping is all in the picking out of gold nuggets from bargain chain stores.

  9. hello Katie,
I recently bought Lily by MC. I am sad to say that the sillage of it is not good. It only lasts 2 to 3 hours. I wonder if I am buying a wrong perfume...coz I am new comer in fragrance.
I remembered last time when i tried perfume at stores, I was hardly to figure out what notes I like. when I tried Love Chloe, the instinct impression for me is a little bit pungent.however, when time went, the perfume on my skin smelled better than ever..Sadly, I have bought LILY right before I found Love Chloe better.. Could you help to give some review or tips of choosing perfume for new comer in your video? thanks very much!

    Yanny
