Tauer Perfumes Orange Star

...cheerfully zesty, lickably likable.


Orange Star, Tauer Perfume’s 9th creation, has inadvertently triggered a repressed memory of me as a klepto 7-year-old, surreptitiously pocketing Pixy Stix at the drugstore for later consumption in my cardboard box “fort”.

Pixy Stix, with its paper straw of sour strawberry, grape, or orange powder, was always one of the most exciting candies. The appeal lay not only in the fun of pouring an entire tube of dry chemicals down your throat, scaling the surface off your tongue in the process, but also in the vibration of pleasure and pain as your mouth dealt with the over-stimulation.

Orange Star sets the wearer on a course to experience the same kind of over-stimulation. It goes on blindingly bright lemony-orange with a Pixi Stix astringency. The tartness is rendered positively lip-puckering with what feels like fizzy aldehydes.

After the initial Pixy Stix salvo, it opens up into something reminiscent of Karma by Lush, the cheerfully zesty orange and patchouli throw down. There’s also a tag-along almond trying to get in on the boisterous fun, but the rest of the gang are too noisy to let Nut Boy get more than a word in edgewise.

30 minutes in, Orange Star has pretty much simmered down to an orange Charms Pop, the chunky boiled sweet on a stick. The eau de parfum stays sheer, light, and carbonated throughout its time on the skin, a diet soda contrast to the orange cream-filled cakes of Lolita Lempicka L and Britney Spears Hidden Fantasy, for instance.

Like another bubbly orange perfume, Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame, Orange Star is candy-like without actually being very sugary. The fizz remains as the orange continues to fade, and Orange Star ends up a kind of teenybopper version of Hermès Eau des Merveilles, a lickably salty citrus. With Orange Star, Andy Tauer’s gone, like, totally teen.
